Strengthening the Linkage Between Academia and Industry; University of Ibadan Holds Maiden George Coumantaros Memorial Lecture

In honour of the late founding father of Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc (FMN), George S. Coumantaros, the Department of Food Technology, at the University of Ibadan organized the Maiden George Coumantaros Memorial Lecture at the University of Ibadan on Thursday, 17th October 2019.

The lecture titled, Strengthening Industry-Academia Partnership for Quality Teaching, Research and Development in the Nigerian University System, was delivered by Professor Charles Aworh, The George Coumantaros Distinguished Professor of the Flour Mills Food Research Centre in the University of Ibadan.

John G. Coumantaros, Chairman, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc in his address at the event informed that the relationship with the University of Ibadan began in 2013, with the birth of the Flour Mills Food Research Centre.

“After careful consideration of the immense benefits that could come from this relationship and the centre, the Board of Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, in 2017 approved the endowment of a Professorial Seat in the Centre which thanks to the magnanimity of the University is named George Coumantaros Distinguished Professorship.” He added.

The Chairman of FMN was represented by Olalekan Saliu, Non-Executive Director, FMN. He disclosed further that the research centre at the school was amongst other things established to strengthen the linkages between academia and industry, and to facilitate the conduct of studies into traditional food processing technologies while developing new food products from affordable, locally cultivated crops.
